Hawaii’s premiere independent dance Company to showcase original works is well known for morphing dance and technology into a multi-media experience. We use video, innovative staging, special effects, aerial acrobatics, witty scripts and captivating musical scores. to deliver a potent social message to humanity. IONA entertains -- while taking the audience on a transformational journey of consciousness, through layers of archetypical Eastern and Western influences, religious symbolism and human evolution. IONA inspires personal, social and spiritual growth and demonstrates how the arts can positively affect the world.
The Los Angeles Times called IONA "a visionary coup de theatre"; the company was voted one of Hawaii's "Best Live Show Performances" by Honolulu Magazine. Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty manages a dance troupe of about 15 performers and a small staff, as well as several seasonal interns. The board of directors consists of professionals who bring significant business experience including financial management, human resources, and performing arts experience to Nova Arts, the sponsoring 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Board members chair the various committees including Planning Finance & Budget, Marketing, and Fundraising. IONA volunteers consist of approximately 40 community members who sit on various committees and assist with production, public relations and administration.
Our recent works, including The Living Earth, seek to unite people of justice, equality, peace, spirit, culture (especially traditional Hawaiian culture) and the green earth. Change and diversity. Ideas and humanity. Humor, beauty, stillness. IONA challenges while it inspires; teases as it uplifts; tickles with the truth. Since 1990, IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre has revolutionized the face of dance and the performing arts industry in Hawaii. Founder and Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty engages audiences with avant-garde dance, visually rich costumes and unique site locations that evoke a transformational experience for both dancer and observer.
