IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre premieres a new
interactive Salon Series production, 'The Living Tarot', on August 2, 3, 4, & 5, 2007 at 8 pm. 'The Living Tarot' offers a provocative interpretation of the Tarot cards, at 'The House of the Living Tarot', 2627 Pali Hwy in Nu'uanu. The setting for this new creation, staged for the first and only time, is a century-old mansion that stands off the Pali Highway, against the backdrop of the lush Nu'uanu Valley. It was donated to IONA for this powerful event. The house itself inspired Cheryl Flaharty, IONA's creative director, to attempt a 21st Century extension of the Tarot, images of wisdom and divination that trace their origins to 15th Century Milan -- and perhaps much further. Their names and images form a visual language embedded in Western culture -- the Wheel of Fortune, the Fool, the Hanged Man, the Empress, the Lightning Tower, the Hermit. Characters from the Tarot come to life in front of us, with IONA's trademark gentle, playful magic. In each of the fifteen main rooms, a wild, exotic interpretation of a Tarot character will perform, dance, and interact with the audience. Each person in the audience selects his or her own cards, and follows them through a labyrinth. The IONA dancers bring the cryptic oracle to life -- offering insight, infused with symbolism, playfulness, and mystery. You shape your own story, watching it unfold before you in the beauty and originality of the IONA dancers, sets and costumes. Cherly Flaharty takes us on a journey of interpretation and exploration, for those willing to partake in their interactive reading -- creating personal stories -- the images on the cards melding into reality and transforming into evocative tableaux -- a vivid, enlightening dream.
